Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I helpted Dad build his-Dynaco St 70,PAS 3 Preamp with Stephens speakers in homebuilt cabinets.Helpted with that.Yet I still wasn't allowed to use the system.Later years got my own.And of course my Brother and I late night listening sessions when the folks weren't home.We were really supposed to be doing our school homework.

Rex....

If the Stephens speakers are still around grab them, those are up there with Altec 604s &c for quality and great to pair up with tube amps!

IMO an all analog component (or quality console)system from TT or mag tape to tube preamp/amp to efficient high quality AlNiCo speakers (>92dB/watt/meter) is a combination that just can't be beat for authentic sound.

Roger---Wished I could have those Stephen speakers--they got lost in the Rapid City Flood of 1972 along with the rest of my Dads system-mine too-A Scott LK48 Amp,Carelson-Philips speakers and a PE turntable.I can agree analog is best-esp with "firebottles" but the cost of such systems is just getting too expensive for us mortals to afford anymore. And such things are so difficult to find my way.Someday I will put your Magnavox TT with an amp and some Altec Speakers I have-someday-when I have time and can dig things out of storage.I just need a bigger house-a freind suggested a castle-unfortunately none of those in the Greenville area.
The radio-flashlight-cigarette lighter-strange-but in a way useful.Good forDXer folks and flashoholics-and smokers!

Wasn't this supposed to be about Westinghouse?

As many of you know, a Stephens horn from a Magnavox Windsor is very valuable. They often sell for close to $2,000...sometimes more. I'm certain many Windsor's were trashed, Drexel cabinets, electronics and record changers, just ot sell the horn separately. Like the Westinghouse "mock clock," there one in my garage covered up patiently waiting for me to get off my fanny and restore it.

Sectorial horn!--NICE!!didn't know Magnavox used these.Looks like a small version of an Altec Voice Of The Theater Mid-tweeter horn used in theaters at one time--not so long ago.VOTTS are another type of speaker seeked out by their fans-esp in Asia.Altec still makes them-and many get shipped there! So sad to trash a Magnavox Windsor for the components-more fun to have the WHOLE Hi-FI!!!But we got to keep those "G-Fiddlists" happy. Don't see why a guitar amp fan would want the horn-but the LF speaker would be of more interest to them.Guess this started out Westinghouse-then progressed to more Higher End Hi-Fi.Oh yes-RCA made a similar speaker system to the VOTT-at one time Western Electric and RCA supplied theaters with equipment in the older times. The bass section of the Altec VOTT and RCA used a folded horn with 2 15" speakers.they were either biamped or equipped with a crossover to use one amp. Some theaters even put one amp on each 15" speaker-this wasn't always necessary-but to get that THX certification when it first came out.Usually Crown or QSC amps. The extra amp and speaker gave you some redundency-in case one speaker and amp went-the other could complete the night before the blown amp-speaker replaced. The Altec horn often had two drivers for this purpose as well.

Watched the videos of the Magnavox Windsor and Imperial Windsor-Impressive peice of Hi-Fi gear even today.A quad 6L6 amp would be a "Super amp" in that time-up to 100W RMS!!!Glad they took the limiting resistor out of this-not only limits power to the speaker-but spoils the damping-ability of the amp to control the speaker.Would love to have one of those--but space and cost-sets like this are now rare as the proverbial hens tooth!

Unlike Concert Grands, I occassionally see a Windsor for sale at a very reasonable price. Not all of them have the Stephens horn but instead have a 3 tweeter paper speaker array. They still sound very nice. The one I have was advertised on the San Luis Obispo Craigslist, about 350 miles north of me. The very nice guy and his GF loaded it into his VW van and brought it down to me when he vivited his parents in Palm Springs. I explained that parts of it were valuable but he wanted to see it restored, not gutted. I paid around $135 (I think.) There's still nice people out there.

The Windsor was available with an optional hutch with television which doubled the price to $1,600 which was a lot of money in 1947/1948. You could get  a "naughty" pine cabinet too. They added a 3-speed changer in 1950.

Portland, Oregon really rocks MCM

Houses, furnishings, the 6 leg Westinghouse console is too good to pass up, I wouldn't argue too much about the price. How many clean tube sets have you seen like that?

Here's what they say is a Westinghouse Custom Imperial tube three channel portable stereo.
