Sweet response from her.

I wonder if she's checking AW.  Probably not a top priority.  It's got to be hard on our medical personnel at this time in history.  60K dead in the U.S.   ugh.  One can only imagine.

Launderess,

I'm happy to hear you're safe. I've a dear friend who lives in Sugar HIll, near the north end of Convent. He has something of a routine. With each errand he needs to run, he has a set of shops he swings through on his way home. This way he avoids having to depend on one shop having everything in one place. Though he is a walker and thinks nothing of walking to his doctor's appt. on 125th and back. He's been able to find pretty much everything with this method.

FWIW, Read Star active dried yeast was recently found in the produce aisle of FoodTown on St. Nick's and 147th. The dollar store a few doors north of C-Town at the north end of St, Nick's generally has paper towels and toilet paper.

And thinking of that area brought to mind the Jumel mansion and Marjorie Eliot's Sunday jazz concerts at the Triple Nickel.... Wonder when I'll be able to appreciate either of those again..........

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you're well. Please keep in touch so we don't worry.

Jim

Yes,

my sister in law is a nurse caring for covid patients. She said it's as bad as you've heard from further east. Yet here we have whacko's protesting their right to stop soacial distancing, and open all the restaurants for dine in service, gyms, etc., etc. Won't catch me in one yet. Sure, we're seeing a drop in cases, but that may not be if we throw caution to the wind this soon. It's the heard mentality that time will kill it off. How much time though?

Good to see you posting again and a relief to hear you're doing well. Stay strong and focused, we'll eventually prevail get through this mess.

Priorities are really rather odd in NY at the moment.

All parades beginnning with Saint Patrick's last February and including Gay Pride in June have been canceled. Indeed it doesn't seem as if any parades will be allowed for remainder of year. However mayor is saying the annual Macy's big fireworks do will go on as usual, how does that work?

Needless to say anyone or thing connected with tourism or entertainment are in very bad ways. Many for instance had big plans for this years Gay pride month as it was 50th anniversary of that march. If bars and other venues are still closed (as they likely will), there won't be any money for anyone I shouldn't wonder. Even if places are allowed to open if social distancing rules remain in effect it pretty much will come down to why bother.

Am thinking city will be nearly empty this summer, more than usual. There just isn't any reason to remain or come here for those that have options. People will remain in the country or at the shore. Of course no one will likely be flying here internationally or even perhaps nationwide.

Many restaurants opened this week, and more have plans to do so next. These places could have remained open long as they practiced social distancing/delivery or take out only, but many chose to close last month. Now they are coming back in hopes of making some money instead of nothing I suppose. That plus reality of new normal likely means things won't be going back to way they used to be anytime soon. Guess new motto is a twist on that old British motto "Export or die". Except in this instance it is "take-away or die".

As of interest likely to much of this group (hahaha) laundromats and dry cleaners....

Most largely closed last month for various reasons even if deemed able to continue work as "essential". Places that were open operated with shortened hours. Local laundromat for instance was normally open from 7AM to 9PM M-F with last wash at 730PM. They went to 730AM to 730PM with last wash at 630PM during height of crisis. Don't know about weekend hours but think they remained same which were already shorter than weekday.

Thing is many of these places are staffed and or owned by Asians (mostly Chinese and Korean) and sadly any business in that boat has been given stink eye by many since this crisis broke.

Young lad who is the main attendant along with his various helpers (they take it in turns closing and opening) are all Asians and you want to feel so sorry for what they are going through. They have to work or else....

Any who this laundromat has resorted to leaving both front and back doors open along with running fans to promote air circulation. Thing is on chilly days we had many of the past several weeks it was like standing in a wind tunnel. Passed a few persons one knows from area doing their wash standing outside. Besides social distancing most said they stood outdoors because it was warmer than inside . *LOL*

Walking around have noticed many dry cleaners/laundromats are planning to reopen May 4th or some time next week. How much good it will do them in our area I don't know as many households have long packed up and moved to the country.

From reading local online media many New York inhabitants went out and bought portable washing machines and or are making other arrangements. They are fearful of being in cramped spaces that are most NYC laundromats (in Manhattan anyway, those elsewhere in city often are a bit more spacious), and or simply of having people they don't know or trust doing their wash. It never bothered them before they didn't know where those who did their wash had been, now suddenly it is an issue.

this in relation to the pandemic reply from Laundress above;

I saw an instagram post yesterday by a male nurse, asking for us all to be thankful for them, and all first responders. A reply said he got thanked every time he got a paycheck, so stop whining. Unbelievable some people are that ignorant.

Unbelievable some people are that ignorant.

And appalling that they are so ungrateful!

These medical care workers are not only putting their lives on the line every time they care for a COVID-19 victim, they put their loved ones lives on the line when they return home, not knowing they too are now infected and will then pass the virus on to their family members.

Even during normal times its an insult to tell any public servant that their paycheck is their “thanks”.

"Thanks to social distancing rules shops are only allowing certain number of persons inside at a time. Places have created markers on sidewalks indicating six feet distance apart."

Pretty much the same here in California. Supermarkets and grocery store have the six feet distance tapes on the floors before checkout. Even Home Depot. The markets may also meter access through the front door, although so far I've only seen that at Costco, where people have thronged to hoard basics like TP. It's clearly more of a challenge to social distance in a vertical city like Manhattan. But New Yorkers seem to be a determined lot who meet spatial challenges with aplomb.

L. Dear, I'm so glad you're OK.

If it's any consolation, the lines for TJ's are just as long here as they are in the picture you posted.  Timing is key.  My friend goes to the store at 6 AM and says it's a breeze.  I love to sleep, so I'm OK with waiting in line and keeping my distance.

Health workers putting their families life on the line

Here in the state of Victoria, Australia our health care workers currently have the option of staying at a hotel to avoid putting their families at risk. The state government is paying the hotel bill. Also anyone working at hospitals including Drs, nurses, transport drivers, cooks, cleaners who have to isolate due to exposure can stay at hotels too.

Is Australia's

natinoal healthcare system similar to the UK's? I know you have private as well as public hospitals, so must also have additional private insurance available? So how is it? Have yo had it as long as Canada since Tommy Douglas got it passed there?
The Uk began in 1946. Is care good? Waiting times for treatments? I know of a few American doctors who are living in New Zealand working on theirs. It sounds like it is very solvent, as it cost money to pay for nurses and doctors to stay in hotels during this crisis. I say it's very commendable! No system is ever perfect.
Many Americans say socialism fails once you run out of other peoples money. I think Margaret Thatcher actually siad it first. Ironic the US govt. has yet to run out of all our money, so I say all taxes are relative to socialism. It;s money form us, the public. I think govt. programs fail when those in charge steal the equity and or surplusses. They've done it here, as have many corporate raiders, and Wall steet magnates.

Upon certain

sources reporting that a certain someone is blaming China for deliberately releasing and spreading Covid 19, all I have to say about that, is that if it was, it was sent there from here.
Since China suffered the intial outbreak causing many lives lost, factories closed, etc., why would they do so? Especially considering the west is keeping them going. I doubt it's true, but if it is, only the one(s) who did it know. I never under estimate the wickedness of the power hungry and or greedy.
