Why do they cut the power cords? Spite, so no one else can use it? Why? I told you earlier, I had this same washer when I lived on the third floor of a three story walk up in Yonkers. That machine only has the two minute fast agitation then switches to slow speed agiataion...or gentle wash system as it was called. But it was a good little machine!!!

Vigorous Agitation?

No this is the way a real washer is supposed to work Louie, you have just gotten to used to watching a MT.

 

These are very effective little washers. It does look like your leak is coming from the center-post seal, this type of failure was unusual but easy to fix. The shocks and springs are one part on these machines, hopefully replacing all three will improve the centering of the tub assembly, but the slight out of center condition yours shows usually does not cause any performance problems and we usually leave well enough alone on these washers. Many times even with three new shocks they will still lean a little.

 

The reason most cords get cut off old electrical items is that people sell the copper wire for MONEY, I cut the cord off every appliance that I send to the scrap yard. If an old machine is sitting on the curb it is easier to grab the cord than the entire appliance for scrap. The old cord can be worth 50 cents up to $2 or more for 240 cords from ranges and dryers.

The odd thing is that the spin won't engage until I remove and replace the pair of pliers I'm using on the safety switch. I haven't run a full cycle with the lid closed yet. The machine jiggles a bit during agitation because I removed one of the side panels. </span>

Cutting Power Cords On Electrical Appliances

Far back as one can remember persons have been doing this in our neck of the woods. My father, uncles and every male one knew did so before chucking any electrical appliance away from a table fan to fridge.

Seem to recall the reason given had something to do with children not playing around with discarded appliances and harming themselves.

As for copper and other scrap metal of value in appliances; too true. New York City must see precious to little revenue from appliance or anything else with metal recycling schemes. Any item placed on the curb for collection by sanitation will be gone in <five hours, collected by roving bands of scrappers on foot and in trucks. It is either that or they are out there all hours of day and night whacking things to bits in order to break apart anything of value. It's like a horde of well equipped rats.

<span style="font-size: medium;">Well I confirmed it. The machine will not go into spin after draining. You have to lift and close the lid for it to proceed. The timer is still advancing, like the spin had engaged.</span>

 

<span style="font-size: medium;">When the spin did start, the load became terribly out of balance. Had to rearrange the load. Still, it struggled, oscillating a bit too much for comfort. I guess the shocks are really gone then. Maytag to the rescue!

Did a little research. As some of you may recall the Whirlpool fills, washes, drains and will not advance to spin unless I raise and lower the lid. I've read the following may be wrong: Bad lid switch, bad timer, bad tranny. Now before I order any parts, I'd like to know from you experts out there if I am missing any other possibilities.

Non Automatically Spinning WP DD Washer

Hi Louie, After a FOUR minute Hi Motor speed drain period the timer should stop the motor briefly [ 3-6 seconds ] and then the timer will restart the motor and the transmission will kick into spin. Are you waiting long enough for this to happen ?, but if the timer is truly not doing this pause it would be a bad timer and while anything is possible this is a very unlikely timer failure.

My final update. I've decided to give the Whirlpool  to Yogitunes.  I really wanted to finish this machine, but I am just too overcrowded at the moment. And I know it's going to a good home.

 

I hope to get another, older version in the future when space permits. Hopefully in Coppertone or Harvest Gold.
