I Knew That Would Happen!

Every single time someone posts a rare and or interesting auction/sale here in the group, what was formerly considered little better than salvage by the seller or sellers, now is worth and fetches big money.

Bet the minute the link was posted the seller was bombarded with messages and offers.

In the end it gets a whole lot of persons hopes up and often leaves nothing but bad feelings.

I'm sad to hear of this turn of events.

Launderess, I think that you have a point. The art of the deal is playing the cards close to the vest. I've seen more than once where a machine was posted, by a person looking to get information to sell it, people, not intersted in purchasing the item, responded with great passion and subjective pricing information which did nothing more than jack the price through the roof!! What's the point. There was a beautiful washing machine in Rhode Island that by the time we all got through with her she wanted a foolish price that nobody (that I know of) was willing to pay. Again, what's the point.

I don't know what the answer should be but I, personally, will never reply to any of these postings unless I'm willing and able to act on it. Anything else, I feel, would hurt one of you in your quest to aquire/save it :-)

Thoughts???

I think...

The same thing happened a few months ago when I posted the Turquoise Maytag Set.
Revvin Kevin and Bajaespama almost went into a headlock (IN my own Opinion as I was involved sort of).

I don't even know what the end result was, but I know I'd never want to lose a friendship or a relationship with anyone in the club. They're Beautiful. ( the Charcoal Set) And if someone has the money to over bid what anyone wants, so be it. It's amazing what can happen over these things. It's ashame that bidders can't figure it out. I'm looking to part with about 3-4 of my machines. If they go to members , fine. If they don't, well I hope whom ever buys them gets great enjoyment out of them. The fear they will be scrapped, I can't worry about anymore.

Thing is this was *NOT* an auction, but an estate sale. If the link handn't been group members wouldn't have started "dreaming". Cannot say the end result would have been different as IIRC upthread it is mentioned another vintage appliance group got wind of the pair as well, and there was interest.

Personally I like to roll light and undercover. Why would anyone tell god and the world about something they want, that is what I say.

As for the turquoise Maytag set, I can top that. *LOL*

Years ago now when I was just wee junior member of the group I posted a link to a MIB pink Maytag intage W&D set. IIRC the fleaBay sale ended at over one thousand dollars, bid up very heavy. There were lots of bad feelings when that was over and done with as well.

Estate sales are famous for changing prices and or selling things from under someone if the seller gets wind of potential "action". Remember a group member telling a story of his adventure to an estate sale where the woman running the show was a real nut case. Having spied some vintage appliances the member moved to take a closer look, and was quickly stopped and told off. "Those are spoken for" she said. So on the guy went exploring and came upon some vintage laundry products, only to feel the rough side of that woman's tounge again. "I Told You Those Were Spoken For".... In the end our brave member was asked to leave because he was ticking the lady off. *LOL*

Oh well, these things go as they will one way or another. However once I saw the appliances pictured in the OP link, just knew there was no way that washer and dryer would go for cheap, or even $850. All the information anyone looking to do a deal with the seller was there.

Hmmm, wonder if that house is abandoned? How nosey are the neighbors? I mean if say a group of "moving people" where there to shift a few things (besides the W&D might as well make a sweep of the place, you never know..), would anyone notice? *LOL*

I'm just sayin.......

Hard Feelings

I've seen it happen here and other places...

The way I see it, it isn't worth arguing over here, because usually people who do have the $$$ to drop on things like this also want a place to showcase them. It's part of the thrill. There is no fun in having the rarest of rare or special non heard-of items if you don't have an audience to present them to.

I am in no way interested in these machines, as neat as I think they are. There's something about Frigidaire's that I think are very neat, but in my area, apparently there are very active GM lover(s) because in the past 4 years I've been out-done 5 times for various Rollermatics and a Unimatic. It's interesting to see them show up here. It creates hard feelings, what you want to believe aside, it does. Some people however take it worse than others. It perturbs me when this happens, but it usually does not stick. After 3 times in a row to 1 person it gets grossly irritating however. It's perfectly legal and the buyer is perfectly in their right to do it, but that doesn't mean people still don't get mad about it. Some people are also either more tenacious about pursuing things or have a LOT of time of their hands. I myself am at a horrid disadvantage in this area because I stay very busy with work. I've seen people jump on things within minutes and the dollars start to fly. People selling these machines usually only want money and have no moral obligation to sell something to you for an agreed on $100 when they start getting calls offering $500 for it. I've dealt with this a few times and it's sad. I don't have a disposable income for appliances, I don't do it for a living, I don't have time to scour every classified site daily... Does it mean that I don't still love old appliances? No. It just means that I don't have as much time and money as others do and for that I usually get the short end of the stick. I'm not upset, but just saying what it is. People do get upset about these things, and I definitely feel like I've been wronged a few times. I still keep trying, but whoever said money didn't make one's life easier needs to be slapped with a stack of bills!

Just be mindful of fellows members... Is it really worth it over a washing machine?

Wow, those are SO cool; probably my favorite GM laundry pair and in a color I've never seen anywhere... Not terribly far from me, but no money for them. It is shame that the price escalates SO quickly; keeps them out of the hands of some who could restore and cherish them. Do hope they go to somebody here who will enjoy them. Could turn into an interesting saga: "As the Tub Spins".

Good Points

With youth comes frustration and impatience, I have to admit that Tom. Sometimes I get so worked up about "finds" that it really gets me going for a while. I'm working on it, and I've found some neat stuff for sure. I just don't have the patience and finesse yet needed for some of the real gold mines. :)

I'm going to be out of town, otherwise I would swing by this sale...it's just a few minutes from where I live and work. As cool as the washer/dryer set is, I'd be more interested in the old Nesco roaster still in the box! It would be fun to see the machines in person, but there's always another estate sale the next weekend.

And I have to agree with Tom, sometimes these estate sales can be real downers. A person's life scattered about with price tags on everything...it is a reminder that you can't take anything with you. I can only imagine the estate sale they're gonna have when I check out...I feel sorry for the poor suckers who have to deal with it all!

On the upside, if some of these things end up in the hands of people who really love them, cherish them and keep them, then the original owner sort of lives on in a sense, as a part of their life in now folded into a life of someone else.

Video Evidence

Be cool to get video evidence of the machine collector in action.  You could pretend you are testing your camera in the parking lot and film them being loaded and taken away.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over them. If there's a standing bid of $2000.00, so be it. The family is happy, the buyer is happy, everything works out. The only ones upset are those who thought they might buy them for $200.00 or so.

As for old machines, when I get them, I know what a few members are looking for, and I inform them. If they want them, then they get them. They're happy, I'm happy, and no hard feelings. That way I don't deal with dreamers, or "well, let me see....", or "if it was closer....",yada,yada.

As many appliances and vehicles as I have sold, traded, bought, and walked away from I have learned that the depths of someones pockets and the perceived value of items vary widely. If you want to have 2 grand or any amount of money to blow on nonessential items than rework your budget in order to have that money when something you really want pops up. Otherwise, if you didn't have it to begin with, you didn't loose it in the end.

OK...--I was There!!!!!!

So whoooooo bought the W/D set????

There was a "SOLD! DO NOT TOUCH!" sign on the appliances...

Someone was passing out "numbers", I guess needed to bid on items? But i didn't need, I could just go in and look and wondered if anyone else of you in the MI-area showed up there 'round 9AM like I did...

Oh my! I wonder who snatched these up?? Maybe it's someone in the club.

If you're gonna play with the big dogs, you better have the balls to do so. No use flapping around and breathlessly "ohmigod" all over the place and then whine when the price skyrockets. It's a hard lesson to learn. Congrats to whoever got them, and I hope it is to a loving, caring home who will share!

Yes

I feel sure a fellow club member got them, and I for one and very happy for whomever it is. Maybe I'll get to see these rare old girls in person one day.

Rickr, good to see you around again, haven't seen you posting in a while!
