Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Odd...

You'd think she'd be painting the heart on the washer, considering it has the pulsator, after all (and the spin cycle). Go figure.

Oh, well, if she messed up, Lord knows you can use a razor blade on all that porcelain to just scritch that little love-doodle right off.

Thank you guys!

Sometime I will do a thread of these, with some restoration pixs and videos of operation.

In the meantime, here is what they looked like before the restoration.

Rick, could you briefly sum up how you painted the machines? I was under the impression that porcelain really couldn't be painted...

Hey Jed, I have a good friend that does the metal/paint work for me. He is the painter at the Porche dealer, and is a perfectionist. I gut the cabinets, then if he wants the cabinet blasted first, I have them blasted. These Frigidaires were in very poor condition. I almost scrapped them out for parts. The washer had leaked for years and had even rusted a couple holes in the lower cabinet area.It was also dented. At any rate, the porcelain was blasted so that the eching primer, finishing primer, and paint would adhere to the metal.
You are correct, paint will not stick to porcelain.

Here is what the cabinets looked like after the basic metal prep. The cabinets sat this way all spring and summer, because my friend was busy with his free time restoring his 1966 Oldsmobile 88 convertible. Finally he got the cabinets finished just before the really cold weather sat in.

Rusted bottom brace.

Anytime the washer was moved, it would leave a trail of rust from the lower cabinet and bottom brace. The replacement brace is from a 1961 model. I was able to make some modifications to it and use it on the 66 Custom Imperial washer.

The pump leaked for years, and the outer tub had one rust hole in it as large as a dime. These both must have leaked for decades.
