A sad day

I just thought I would share with my AW family, that I had to have my dear Quigley put to sleep Saturday afternoon. He was just shy of 13 years. Since so many of us are animal lovers to, and many of us have lost a dear pet, you know how hard this was and what an empty place it leaves in our hearts. Quigley had severe Arthritis in both his front legs, and his back legs were pretty shot to. He was a trooper through everything. He fell in the yard Friday morning, and his yelps of pain are something I promised I would not hear again. I didn't want to put him through more pain or waiting for him to fall and break something. It's been very hard to see him get old and be 1/2 the dog he used to be. He went very peacefully, with my holding his head and telling him what a good boy he was, and 3 friends alongside too. He even gave the Vet and Vet tech kisses beforehand. The tech had to leave the room as she was crying.
So please, if you have pets, please go and hug them and give them a little extra love for Quigley. Cherish every day you have with them, I know I did with this wonderful animal!

I have a 11 year old border collie just starting to show suffering from arthritis, so I know her day is not too long off. I do thank you for sharing the story of Quigley, it will help me when Girlie's time comes.

There is a magical relationship between man and dog that defies logic or explanation-it is in a class of love all by itself.

Get another dog, you've obviously done a great job with this one.You can raise it in the tradition of Quigley, in his memory because Love never dies.

Your dog was gorgeous, absolutely beautiful!!
My dog, a cochapoo, is 13, will be 14 on Feb. 10th.
He's had ACL tears on both hind legs, one we repaired and one healed on its own. It really is hard to see a pet age and struggle as they grow older. It seems so unfair their lives are soo short. I don't know how much longer we'll have our little guy. He's such a sweetheart.

You are right, time to give an extra hug because you never know. Please know my thought are with you now and the days ahead. Take care!!

So very sorry to hear about your great loss. I was in that position around this time two years ago when I lost my beloved Beijing. I had great support at that time from the wonderful 'friends' here at the AW site.

May you cherish the wonderful times that you shared with Quigley, and now know that he is looking down at you smiling thanking you for the wonderful years that you spent together.

Oh no, I'm so sorry about your Quigley
My old Parker (border collie) is 13 now and he's aged rapidly over the last year. 2 months ago I went downstairs where he sleeps in the laundry room since he can no longer uncarpeted climb stairs well, and he was laying there in his own mess unable to get up, eyes darting back and forth I thought he'd had a stroke. I was in tears driving him to the vet figuring he wouldn't be coming back. But it turned out to be a case of vertigo and he got over it in about a week back to his very semi-bouncy self. Still his rheumatiz is bad in the back legs, he's fine once he's up but for how long who knows.

To anyone with an aging dog with arthritis I highly recommend getting a vets prescription for a newer dog drug called Deramaxx. It has been a godsend for Parker. It seems expensive per tablet but they are breakable into quarters so he only needs 1/4 pill per day to keep him going. In fact when I first went with him to the vets last fall about it the drug company was giving free trial 7 tablets, good for 28 days.

Hi Jim~

I am so sorry to hear about your handsome boy Quigley.
We have 3 dogs... A Greyhound who is 14, a Dachshund who is also 14 and a 2 year old Weimaraner. The Dachshund is still very spry for 14 but, the Greyhound is really starting to show his age within the last year. I am really dreading this myself because I have never had to put an animal down before. Please know you will be in my thoughts and I am glad you shared this sad news with us.

I know your pain.

To date, I've had seven Samoyeds, most of which came from the pound or from rescue. I adopt older dogs knowing that they're hard to place, they're likely to be trained, they're likely to be appreciative, and that they're likely to need to be put to sleep far too soon.

I've had to make the decision five times. I've suffered through the loss five times. No matter how heart-rending the end is when it comes, I can't imagine life without dogs around the house.

The pain will subside. In the end, it's really worth it. Time after time.

Still, the cold, hard practicality of the situation doesn't hold back the tears as I think of Quigley, and of my dogs both past and present. Ivan and Micha will be getting extra scritches tomorrow morning.

I am so sorry, Jim, about Quigley. What a lovely boy!

The loss of a pet is like loving member of the family – because that it is what a pet is. I know my little dog Max was a spirited character, and I was thinking about him earlier today. I miss him dearly – he was put to sleep in early September – and the place really is not the same without him. However, we do have two other dogs, and I know they miss hm.

I always tried to make a point of giving Max lots of attention, even when he was younger and fully fit. We knew it would be so hard when he went because, although many of us say this, he was quite literally unique – the most daft, mad, sweet and bossy little Cavalier King Charles/Yorkshire Terrier cross ever! LOL He was so intelligent. So much so that we used to say he would start talking soon – and he used to have ‘arguments’ with us other things! This was nothing nasty – he’d just answer back at times, or he would ask for a certain treat! We used to ask him which colour treat he would like! LOL That’s despite the fact that dogs cannot see colours!

Anyway, many a good word has been said here and elsewhere about everything surrounding our pets. They truly are special, and it’s important to remember all the really good things you did together. In time, I promise you, things will ease, and all the nice things will come out in time. Quigley would not have wanted you to be sad for too long.

Remember, if you want to talk, just ask any of us.

I am so sorry to hear about the lost of your dog, Quigley. In March of this year, I lost my Bernese Mountain dog, Duke. He had a form of cancer called Histiocytosis which is common in 20 percent of this breed of dog. Duke had just turned 5 years old when the first symptoms became apparent and quickly deterioated in less than a month when we put him to sleep so that he did not suffer any longer. I'm still heartbroken and miss him-my goofy giant boy.
