Removing the upper rack

Nathan, the manual doesn't say anything about removing the upper rack. However I have done this numerous times, both with this dishwasher and with my previous AEG's, and have had no problems at all, and only clean pans, roasting trays, and oven racks as a result :-).

Hope you had a great Christmas!

Jon

Mom's dishwasher

New for Christmas last year, it replaced a TOL 1982 Maytag Jet-clean all pushbutton model. I was sad to see the old one go.

Jon great pics ty. Jeff, top rack doesn't look goofy. It all fit very well. Although I see a way or two to have arranged things and gotten more in there. Then you would have qualified for a Bob load. John, you got Bob loads. You do me roud.

fun thread...

My mom thought I was nuts for taking pics of her dishwasher though...
Bob load? If you mean stuffing it full, yes I do those on my own dishwasher that I am used to. I do not like this new Maytag of mom's at all...

Jeff, curious why you don't like your mom's new Maytag. Vs. Frigilux being in love with his new one lol. I always wanna get different perspectives.

I don't like mom's new Maytag because:

It's fit & finish is nothing like the 1982 model she had. Is this thing even made by Maytag?
It took three tries to get one that worked properly(believe it or not she had two defective machines in a row installed, the third one finally worked properly)
Its noisy(compared to my Kenmore)
The slosh-y water sounds are wimpy compared to the 1982 model, and my Kenmore
The racks are weird, especially that tiered upper rack.
The silver basket front and center on the lower rack is in the way. I much prefer the configuration of my Kenmore with the basket along the side.

Its my fault she has the damn thing in the first place. Last year on Thanksgiving was when I found out the old 1982 DW was dead. Timer stuck, or frozen. I suggested repair but mom said she'd just get a new one. Knowing her, that would take a while so the following morning I went to Sears on my way to work and bought her a Kenmore tall-tub as close to mine as I could get. When the man came to install the Kenmore, it would not fit the space occupied by the old Maytag, so back to Sears mom went, and exchanged for a Maytag. Two defective machines were installed and sent back before she got a good one.
I remember the sharp pain I felt seeing the old DW on the curb too...that was before I knew about this site. I would have saved it for restoration, and re-installation in my kitchen some day.

This might explain some of the differences in our opinions about Maytag DW's:

1) SILVERWARE BASKET-- Mine splits into two skinny halves, which can be placed along the sides. This is the first thing I did when I got my machine. It would drive me crazy to have it front & center, restricting the loading of large items. In fact, I can usually get along using only one of the skinny halves, which opens up even more room in the bottom rack. The split-basket was available only on a few models.

2) QUIETNESS-- My machine has their most recent sound-dampening system, which is called QuietWash 400 (or something like that). It's my understanding that my machine isn't as quiet as a BoschMore, but compared to my Frigidaire, it's noticeably quieter--and that machine wasn't as loud as the mid-90's TOL KitchenAid I had.

3) TIERED UPPER RACK-- This was my biggest concern in getting a Maytag. After a few days of getting acquainted with how to load it, I'm sold. My top rack is adjustable up and down by several inches, which increases loading flexibility in both the top and bottom racks.

4) Fit & Finish-- I'm not seeing any problems with my machine. The door is certainly more solid than was the one on my previous DW. However, I don't have an early 80's Maytag to compare it with.

Reasons #1-3 are why I chose Maytag's TOL machine with a stainless interior, rather than one of the other models. Having said all this, many Kenmores, Bosches and BoschMores score higher in Consumer Reports' ratings, and there must be a reason for that. I know part of the reason is that Maytag DWers aren't as energy/water efficient as the above-mentioned machines. Truth be told, if there was a Sears store near me, I'd probably have purchased a BoschMore. My local choices were Frigidaire (been there), Whirlpool (been there), KitchenAid (been there) and GE (don't care for the dealer). I'd never owned a Maytag before and decided to try one. So far, I'm happy with my choice!

I always thought I'd buy Maytag too...

Thanks mainly to the quality of the 1982 machine my mom had. I bought my Kenmore based on two factors:
1. A good friend recommended the Whirlpool/Kenmore/Kitchenaid tall tub
2. I got a deal from Sears I couldn't refuse.

I've never been sorry for a minute that I bought the Kenmore.

Just my opinion too, but whats the point of an SS interior on a DW? Looks yes, but with as cheaply made as some things are today, that SS interior will outlast the DW by a mile. I am sure there is something I am missing as far as that goes...

Stainless Steams?

Jeff:

Our Bosch has a stainless interior. I hope the whole darn thing lasts longer than that horrible bol Hotpoint that was in the house when we moved in! I heard that a SS interior kept the temperature higher in the dishwasher for a better wash and dry. Maybe this is true...opinions?

BTW: I love the way some of you used the special "Pup Pre-Wash" on those Christmas dish loads! ;-)
