Well it's finally home. It was a long drive, but always so nice to see the cape. It was already in the driveway when I pulled up, an old sea-dog (or pirate) was the proprietor.
So after we sang a few sea shanties, he and his grandson, (or boy?) helped me load it on to the truck. He sure was gushing about the condition of the KDS-58. "Only used on Thanksgiving and Christmas, it's virtually new!" The way he went on, it was sounding like a sales pitch. I have to say, it does look minty. Clean inside and out. The butcher block top has some marks on it, but nothing that can't be sanded out. There are some detergent stains, but apparently those can be cleaned off. Anyway, be posting pictures in a bit.
Oh did I mention it was FREE?

While draining from prewash, a high pitched whine started and water started to leak from under the KitchenAid. I immediately hit drain and cancel and the noise and leak stopped once the machine turned off. HOWEVER when I turned it on again the same high pitched whine came back. I haven't looked yet where the leak is coming from, but the whine seems to be coming from the water pump. Am I looking at a new pump for the KDS-58?

Stevet should know what the deal is. Sorry to hear about this. But that machine is so pristine it is definitely worthy of a repair.
Can't believe that was so close to me. I just put my KDS 20 back in service. They are such great cleaners.

I want to run the dishwasher to see where exactly the leak is coming from. Now I know you can remove the bottom panel, but looking at my prior images, I don't see how. Perhaps you can't because this is a KDS-58?

Did you "build the machine in" yet ?
I once had a Mobile Maid that I had lifted up and set on 4 milk crates (one on each corner) in such a way that the center was open so I could shine a flashlight up under while the machine was running to find a leak.

The machine is not built in. It's still on wheels, with long hoses so I can clean underneath it. The four crates is a good idea, but I wouldn't be able to do it by myself.
Leaking KDS-58
Hi Louis the lower front panel removes with a couple of #2 Phillips head screws under the lower edge of it, take off the panel and run a R-N-H and see where its leaking.
A leaking main seal is certainly a possibility, you might have also gotten a foreign object caught in the drain impeller making the high pitched noise.
On KAs like this you disassemble the pumps and fix, there is no replacing a drain pump, unless you replace the entire main motor and pumps.

Yes, I know, the G.E. is waiting, but I need to do some appliance shifting, so this has taken priority. I ran the 58 and this time no screeching, no big leak. It went through an entire cycle and some drops came from this tab (see image). There was barely a tablespoons worth on the floor at the end. So what seal can it be?

I would run it a few more times, this leak may go away.
If not pull the pump and motor and either replace or clean and re-set the original sump gasket.

You were right John...
The leak did go away. How odd. But I'm not complaining. On especially greasy loads, I have been using Cascade Fryer Boil Out. Without a doubt the best detergent available. Leaves everything squeaky clean. I am aware it can damage the insides of the dishwasher, so I use it sparingly. So far, the KDS-58 is working beautifully.

I know this may be a silly question. I have a tall item to wash. Would removing the top rack be detrimental to it's washing ability? Thanks.
