No - its actually not hard at all

The best thing to do, if you are new to this, is to get one of those service manuals that they sell on ebay for the older ge washers. They tell you how to do everything and with pictures, step by step. GE's are easy to repair which is another reason I like them so much. Is the Boot just loose or is it damaged? They are also available for pretty cheap and easy to change out.

An unbalanced load allowed to spin will sometimes pull the boot loose from the retaining ring which is like a big wormgear hose clamp. Sometimes these also rust and break. People who start these and walk away can get some good flooding because the water sprays in and just falls out the bottom when the boot is not in place.

I saw a later Spotscrubber pair at a local Salvation Army a few months back.  The control panels were gray with red and white accents, both machines were in good shape and the washer had all of its accessories.  As with most things at SA, they were way over-priced.

...it was more beat up than the pictures in the auction showed. I just told him I would help him reload it on his truck and just to issue me a refund. But I kept thinking what would a club member do? I figured at least he owed me some kind of partial refund. So we kicked it around and finally came to settlement.

Was drive shaft chewed up too?

what did you initially pay for this, if i might ask?

....If it really bothered me. I could just find a similar vintage GE washer and do a cabinet transplant to take care of the cosmetics.

I think I would have kept it

and tried to make it work - they are always easy to fix - I can see your point though if you felt it wasn't worth it but this overall seems to be a good machine. However, if the drive shaft was chewed up - god only knows what the state of the transmission was...

.....I don't know if anything else is busted since we never got the tub filled. At least the cold water valve works.

....yes, I kept it. I paid $150 for the washer on ebay and $140 for him to deliver it 110 miles to my home that day. That was before we found out it was leaking. We settled on a $100 refund so $190 total delivered.

Well, since you already have the activator off, you can remove the plastic hub on the bottom of the drive shaft to reveal the bolts for the inner tub. Pop the top - two latches up front, with a flat screwdriver,-and raise it up and prop it against something behind it. Then remove the bolts from the inner tub and remove it. Then you will be able to see the rest of the story - rust in the outer tub, if any, the boot and if it just popped off or is indeed damaged and needs repair and anything else. This machine is salvageable, if you want to invest the time and elbow grease. I jet hate to see a GE go to the crusher...

Well, now to get it running since you did invest in it. And WE can help you! Plus I think you'll find it fun and you'll learn a lot too! There's still plenty of parts out there and you can have a great washer! At least you got the proper mini basket with it!

but did the activator come off easy or was it bound up? I've seen worse so this can't be that bad...

...it popped off way too easy. Me thinks someone has been under the hood and recently.

you seen my little upgrades before to these machines......increased water level, circumcised inlet spout, cable tie around the lid switch, interior light, removal of the restrictor......all make these machines a joy to operate, and perform a little bit better......

but anywho....lets get to the machine at hand first....and how can we help?.....lets get that inner tub out first, and see what is all involved with the outter tub......

was the machine transported on its side?.....this usually causes that boot to pop off for some.....

first...does it spin and agitate?.....turn it on....blow air into the pressure hose to make it agitate, and select spin to see if we have any tranny issues....

let us know what you have found at this point.....

we'll get you up and running in no time....

ok, going out now to blow the water level switch (chuckle). Do I need to start spraying those bolts at the bottom of the center shaft with WD40?
