hi all. When I was growing up, my parents bought a belt drive Maytag dishwasher at my urging (mind you, it didnt hurt that I took the top rack of the hotpoint that he was trying to sell to my parents and I showed them how poorly made the machine was, and embarrased the heck outta the salesman at the same time. Anyhow...when it was installed, I got to do the dishes from that point on...my mother was always givin me the gears on how I loaded the machine, would always manage to get EVERY dish used as well as pots and other things for the meal (six of us in the family at that time)
When I hooked up with Powerfin64 and found out he had a Maytag...history was gonna repeat itself..on a daily basis.
I spent the day yesterday making Dutch apple Crisp and Banana Break, trashed the kitchen, and decided to load the machine with the FULL load of stuff I had in the sink...and impressed the heck outt Rich when he saw it...(hmmn..he even shook his head.....trauma!)
It all came clean...Maytag 2000 Jetclean EQ Plus, on a 2 hour auto clean with tough scrub option selected (it did go down to 1:30 after the first wash thru, even with the heavy mess I put into it, dried apple and sugar baked on, mac and cheese, and mixing bowls I left out to dry for the day in the sink (heheheh, oops)
as ya can see...spotless ;)(the mark on the plastic steamer insert is always there, same as for the plastic storage container (microwave trauma to the ziplock) not a leftover residue)

I am surprised how well it cleans the items in the top rack. Because this is a model with a spray tower ( no spray arm under the top rack), and the way you loaded the bottom rack, I am amazed.

For today's water-saving DW's, I don't think spray arms provide any performance benefits over spray towers. Arms provide better coverage but at lower pressure compared to towers.

My DW experience is limited and I could be wrong about this, but I haven't come across any spray tower model made in the last five years that wasn't a stellar performer in the upper rack.

The tower spray on Maytag is quite good. if you notice how I loaded, there is nothing around or in the way of the center tower, if you make sure there is this kind of full access to the upper rack, you get the same result, a full load of clean dishes on both racks every time. Least thats our experience with it.

Will be hunting for a new dishwasher for my new apartment in two weeks, either going Kitchenaid or an older Maytag. have seen an older kitchenaid in avocado in Craigslist in the vancouver area, might go take a look at it when I am back up there.
thanks for the comments...if any one has any suggestions on kitchenaid portables, drop a note

upper rack

I have the '98 version of that machine, and its cleaning ability in the upper rack is amazing.....you can put anything in the upper rack, and it comes out clean...usually on just the "normal" cycle...I dread the day I have to replace it. Don't have a clue as to what I would buy, but a midline Bosch looks appealing right now...

I was looking at Bosch dishwashers too, lately. Thinking of replacing my dishwasher. But I find that their upper racks don't have many tines to keep the glasses in a row. They look like everything might roll around when you push or pull them out. Any opinions on that?

Rich and I went looking at dishwashers at Lowes the other day, looked at Bosch and found the racks were less than adequate for our needs. We did see a Samsung that was quite decent, great racks upper and lower, and looks like a decent wash system as well...just not seen any portables by them sadly.

Portable/Convertible dishwashers are a fast-shrinking share of market production in this country - 41,000 units shipped YTD. (*Appliance Magazine - 8/08) I believe Frigidare/Electrolux has one or two models and Whirlpool-Maytag may have a model or two in their lineup. GE? The options are few but for my money if forced to buy a new portable, I'd have to stick with Whirlpool out of sheer terror ;-)

The Samsung is an Asian-made product, no connection to Maytag/Whirlpool. Whirlpool inherited a service obligation from Maytag for some of the Samsung products but I'm not sure of the status of that now...

I have the same machine around 2000 (MDB7100AW) it replaced a disapointing 1992 Kitchenaid, I am consistantly suprised how such a simple mechinism can clean so well on the top rack even when I load it recklessly.

Compaired to the Kitchenaid the Maytag Cleans silver and glasses a notch better its front panel is much easier to keep clean and it is ALMOST Bosch silent where the Kitchenaid sounded like a storm at sea

The Kitchenaid did have its good points I liked the adjustable top racks and I miss the cloud of steam that jetted out of the vents when the electric drying fan started and the other small plus for the Kitchenaid... It was never recalled for starting 135 fires

Still I hope to have this machine for a long time and for my money I will brake away from the classic Kitchenaid crowd and side with this old Maytag every time ... Just be sure to have the Jetclean dispenser disabled or replaced by Whirlpool

I'm almost embarrassed to mention it in the same paragraph as classic KA's and Bosch's, but we've been very happy with the Kenmore portable we bought a few months ago.

Here's a link to the model.
