Maytag AMP weekend in Omaha!

So with water going into and out of the dryer i take it that this a condensation dryer?

And to think, we had a AMP sitting in our garage when I was 12. My Dad was given the machine, it went to a neighbors, she didn't like it and it went to the C-----r !!!

I was always curious how the water dryer worked. I know this is different than the filtrator but I cant picture the difference.

Ben congratulations on getting these are a must have for any really serious MT collector, its the same set I have except your washer is newer and your dryer just a little older. Your washer must be near the end of the original AMPs mine is made closer to 1950, even the washer lid bottom is still cast aluminum so at least it doesn't have the porcelain chipping problem at the weld points. I hope you decide to tackle the dryer soon the one I have is later as mine has the chrome knobs. I have been dyeing to try mine out since I got it but some how it got pushed into a corner and I haven't gotten around to it. Let me know when you get inspired to tackle it and I will do the same, I think we may have the only two of these original condenser MT dryers out there?.

I'm talking about that spectacular red agitator with the fully erect chrome head. How ironic that as technology advanced, the need for the erectile chrome head vanished, and there went the coolest, most beautiful agitator Maytag ever made. What a pity!
Ben, studying the control dial, I wondering, is that a one-of-a-kind, double rinsing early Maytag like the Frigi WO-65, or is the first rinse a long spray? I ask only because other early models are marked spray, and this one is not, and who would have guessed that early Frigidaires did not overflow but double rinsed instead ?!!!

Robert, ever since my first trip to your place during a cold winter's day in January of '06, I have been waiting to find an AMP. Thanks for being a great mentor!
Eddie, don't be sad about the AMP you guys had in your garage. For most, even after 5 to 10 years these washers looked outdated and were totally improved by what Maytag had for sale at the time. It is truly amazing how many AMP thru 140 washers have survived.
Jon - someday I hope to have the dryer up and running again. Certainly wouldn't be a daily driver, but would love to trade notes with you. Greg mentioned your water dryer (possibly a 61W?) had the kiss idler - be greatful! I'll let you know when I start tearing into it. Thankfully - the seal parts for the pump are interchangeable with wringer pump parts. YAY! Unless someone else is posting here on AW, you and I might have the only existing machines left with the Maytag Water Film drying system.
Mike - the first rinse mark on the dial is for Maytag's famous spray rinse, which seems strange for a solid tub. Learning from Greg, they probably wanted to keep the complete cycle time down and couldn't do a second full rinse within 30 minutes and interchanged the first spin with a spray rinse to save time. Just a hunch, so maybe I should read that patent someday ;-)
Peter, tomorrow I'll scan the cut away of the dryer, along with the explanation from Maytag of the original water film drying technique, along with the water condensation that came out in late 1955. Should be fairly informative.

Thanks again guys. I hooked up the digital A9900 Maytag yesterday for the first time in 2 years, and while I was enjoying the orbital wash action, I couldn't help but walk over to the old AMP, knowing that it is where everything Automatic Maytag started from!

Thanks Ben! I am surprised at the sounds. The greedy pump's gasping mimmicking a Hotpoint or Speed Queen but the background sound of the machine reminds me of listening to a Westinghouse top loader. Somethings never change like the gentle but thorough oscillation of the Maytag gyrator. Who new the action would remain the same for the next 40 years. I'll be looking forward to the famous slamming solenoid.

MT CONDENSER DRYERS
Hi Ben thanks again for your interest in the MT condensing dryers, I went by the warehouse on the way home to check out the differences in our 60Ws. Mine is model # 60W 04 the ser# is 602806GH mine has chrome metal knobs with the same dials and it has the newer front plastic MT emblem that lights up. Other wise they look about identical, mine has the same motor mount and idler pulley arrangement for the pump belt, even the same electrical junction box. I don't think these were changed till the 601Ws ?. I also have a fully restored 640w that works great, Tom found it at an estate sale about 15 years ago. When I got this one you could still get all the functional parts from MT so I replaced the inlet valve ,belts ,drain hose and rebuilt the blower- water extraction chamber and the machine worked very well. I suspect the newer one dries a little faster and at a lower clothing temperature. The addition of a lint filter probably helped prevent pump clogging also. I am still excited to try this earlier one out soon, I always like to have not only the first of something but the last as well. At our warehouse we have aprox 16 MT built laundry appliances stretching from these AMPs all the way through a set of stack Neptune's,.

Would these dryers then take longer to dry a typical load over a traditional vented?? rather like modern condenser dryers...

So you should get the maytag hat i have sent one to Robert for
his wash in so if you want it you can e-mail me i also wanted to give one to Qsd-Dan & Maytagbear if there interested as well.
I got these at my store for a promotion for May is for maytag month so the words should fit perfectly for your washer.
I had no idea that the pump on the very first model stayed on interesting and what is water drying ?
