Hi Guys! Well, I finally got my wishe(s).
For the last few months I had been longing to get a twin tub washer. Working and in GOOD condition of course.
After seeing PhilR's posting for the avocado green Maytag A50 washer & DE50 dryer, I serched Craiglist and Kijiji. It was my lucky week I think!!!
I found a Hoover Rinse-O-Matic had just been listed on CL, and on Kijiji I found another Maytag A50 in white AND........a hardly used Simplicity-(Speed Queen/Servis) in avocado green.
I searched back several months worth of ads and those were it. Other than a Hitachi and a Danby-but no thanks! Well a couple of weeks ago I went and looked at the white A50 and the Hoover. I put a deposit on the Hoover and the A50 was to be held for me until the 31st. I also went and looked at the Maytag avocoado green set as I mentioned in an earlier post.
As LUCK seems to have played itself out.....the Maytag owner wasn't around that week and 'forgot' about me. Since I had a friend with a van and had stuff to GET, I decided on the Simplicity. That was supposed to happen mid this month or next month. But he was selling it this saturday to a Friend if no one else came by then.
I got out there and got that thing for $160.00 (from $175.00 asking) and picked up the Hoover for $130.00 (from $150.00 asking) on the way back.
This Simplicity was THE score of the year for me. I think it saw maybe 10 washes in its beginnings of life and was put away and never, ever used again.
It is in absolutely PRISTINE condition with no rust, no gunk buildup under the tubs, barely even any cobwebs for cryin' out loud!
Not a sign of use except some water marks on the base plate and that's not a big deal.
I have washed about 15 loads so far and have really put it to the test with mixtures of heavy and light loads.
Since I have never used a Simplicity/Speed Queen twin tub before I am amazed at how much I had always underestimated these machines. I mean, it is a Speed Queen afterall!
Built like a tank and built to last!!!
I grew up with a Hoover twin tub and later our first automatic was an avocado green Speed Queen set-so I KNOW both these machines in their respective ways.
It's a true workhorse with that absolute unmistakeable sounding Speed Queen motor purring away and that transmission "click" sound on every stroke.
But I always thought the tub was too small for such a large agitiator and understimated it's spin speed.
It washes amazingly and the spin is indeed fast and spins out a lot of the water. The beauty though is it's quietness in spinning.
I was doing laundry up until 2 am in my apartment and no noise was transferred to the neighbours-it's just so quiet! And so is the pump.
And it rinses fantastically and quite thoroughly too.
So, I'll stop for now, and tell you about the Hoover in a few days when I get to it. The Simplicity has kept me so excited I haven't used the Hoover yet-it has a couple of issues I found when I tested it though so....................?!
I'll post pics of them a little later and with your encouragement, Videos!
The Hoover has a fun unique feature I have NEVER seen before.
And to my fellow Canadian Friends.
PhilR: thanks for the original post-you started it all.
unclejohn: Hello fellow Hoover lover!
barcoboy: CONGRATS on your recent Hoover acquisition. Love to hear how it all works out for you.
BradRoss(?) in New West: gorgeous Speed Queen TT you have.
And macboy91si: you have taught me a LOT, and I offer my thanks and my gratitude.
To all the rest: thanks for hearing my long winded story.
But you ALL know what it's like when you get that score-and you have to share it with like-minded Friends!

Pic(s) are what the seller had posted-not mine.

twinnies

Hi, TwinTubber.

Nice, very nice acquisitions...

The Hoover 632 you refer to is exactly the same model I bought this summer from a guy in the region of Saguenay (Quebec), with the difference that yours has a most remarkable color finish. Mine's model is standard white with gray gasket finish. I have used it a few times and it works great. My machine had to be fully re-painted because of rust and some serious scratches plus original paint discoloration. Once spray painted she just kind of looked anew... Amazing! Now she's almost... sexy!!!

The Simplicity (SQ) is yet another great machine. I know these washers but never had one of those so I can't report about that. Many years back, I remember seeing one of these old Speed Queen twinnies on the sidewalk (there as a giveaway or for the garbage). It was a SQ ''AquaMatic'', looking much alike Simplicity or Servis. Vintage washers in pristine condition like the one you bought are rather scarce...

Concerning the Maytag twin tub, I know nothing about. Based on the company's reputation those little twinnies must have been tough and built to last centuries!

The latest addition to my ''collection'' is an old Hoover washer bradross might recognize: The model 611 (yes, the one with the two small hatches on the back of the unit). Found it on kijiji mid-october and bought it for the asked fifty bucks plus additional cost for the FedEx Ground shipping. A real gem. She is in pretty good shape too. Cool!

Rest assured, TwinTubber, that I can understand your passion for these machines. You certainly have my sympathy for caring about those vintage twinnies. For me, taking care and working to repair those little babes has been a real therapy (a hard time personally since the lost of my dad, some months ago). Thanks TT for sharing with us your incredible findings!

Thanks unclejohn

for those nice words and comments.
Laundry is just so much more fun in a Twinnie!
The Simplicity is now going to be my daily driver and the Hoover will be more the alternative machine on those days I feel in a different mood. And at this point, the Maytags would be completely for fun-I don't see them as very 'serious' washing machines. Too small a capacity and no spin-rinsing is a huge downside. But I'm still gonna get them if I can and enjoy playing with them!
And that will be all. There's not enough room and I don't need any more-this works out just perfectly actually.
And as for the Hoover's colour, it's like the "Face-only-a-Mother-could-Love" story except I consider it a colour "That only a Hoover Twin Tub Daddy would Love". Mustard Yellow I think it is cause it certainly isn't 'Harvest Gold'.
Is yours the stainless steel tub as well? So glad it came with that as I prefer that to plastic tubs anyday.
Does yours have the lint filter? That is soooooo freaking COOL!!!!!
I can't wait video it to show it the Guys in action when I get it running-which may be later today as I'm itching now to get working on it.
Have a great day my Friend, and HAPPY "Twin Tubbing"!!!

Thanks TwinTubber for the congrats. I'm just about to post some photos in my "Finally" thread... stay tuned!

0632

TwinTubber,

(sorry for some delayed answers) Yep, the Hoov 632 I have has lint filter and the stainless tub. Think I still find your mustard yellow more 'exciting' than a all-white unit (moreover, when decorated with scratches and spots of rust!).

Hi unclejohn!!!

I kinda posted this in barcoboy's thread, but I'll just post it here quickly as well.
I do remember the Baycrest name myself, and that was a really, really long time ago. Of course, Beaumark later became their name brand.
So pleased you like the colour of my machine-it definitely is.....different ;)
And I think I'm liking it.
Would like to know more about the effectivness of the lint filtration system however, as I have two cats so removing as much pet hairs as possible from one's laundry is most important to me.
Thanks for the kind replies and all my best wishes to you!

Twin Tubs with heaters

Hi I see that most TT's in both the US and Canada do not have water heaters like they do in the UK. Do most homes in Canada only have a 110V like most of the US?
