This machine was before they added the spray arm on the top. It was still a pretty good machine, all things considered. It did take some care in what you put on the bottom rack, so not to completely block the spray from getting to the top rack. It did have the constant rinse sprayer on the top of the machine for particles on top of the glasses and such. It also had forced air heated drying which was a nice plus and was built like a tank!

Back when manufacturers believed in the products they built. What happened ?

Whirlpool bought them and ruined them! Kitchen Aid today is Junk !!

i have a friend who bought a house in Sherman Oaks, CA and this exact model is in the kitchen...still used for daily use. The door feels like it is made of solid lead compared to today's appliances. He wasn't so thrilled about it but i told him he has a gem. the house also has a western holly oven and range and early 90s maytag washer and dryer. He bought the house from the original owners estate...they were the first house in the "new" developmentin the 50s and featured in Architectural Digest I believe as a new type of home...a ranch! LOL

Not all the blame can be placed on the manufacturers, consumers today insist on buying by price.  If you adjust the original prices of these fine machines for inflation, you'll find that they were quite expensive.

You bet--people want to blow money on crap like 'smart' phones these days rather than more durable appliances. As someone who used those silly things from their inception for business, I'm still floored at how much people will pay to buy and service these, and to fashion their lives around them. Twenty-five years from now I'll probably be in my grave, but kids coming along then will be snickering at today's bunch and the hoopla they have created about them.

It would be nice if Whirlpool would cut it's excess baggage. They have too many nameplates and all basically the same thing. Maybe scale down to just 4 nameplates . Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag and JennAir .Maybe cut JennAir and position KA as the ultra premium kitchen appliances. Just a thought
