Question regarding 24" Gas Self Cleaning Wall Oven

Greetings and Happy New Year!!!

It’s been a “ minute” since I have posted on here but I have been lurking and reading behind the scenes. I hope everybody is doing ok during these challenging times. I plan to remodel my kitchen in 2021, nothing major no footprint change just update the appliances and install new cabinets and countertop. I need some advice from the appliance PhD’s on here !!

My house was built in 1960 and has a 24” Gas built in oven I hate with a passion. My primary issue is no self-clean cycle and the amount of heat/cooking odor it emits. I do not want to trade it out for electric due the expense of adding a 220 line and retrofitting the opening in the wall, there are 24” models made by GE, Frigidaire, and Maytag that are gas and self-cleaning.

My question is do the self-cleaning models have a smoke elimination module or filter? None of the spec sheets list it? I remember my Mom’s 1973 Twin 30 Frigidaire by GM had some sort of smoke elimination filter under the rear right burner and there was never any smoke emitted during the cycle.

I'm sure you will get a corus of folks that are anti self cleaning, I 'm not part of that group, I use my SC cycle often.  However I'm not a big fan of current Frigidaire, I'd opt for GE or Maytag. 

 

My Electrolux does not emit a lot of smoke, never smell much of anything.  This might be due to the fact most/all ovens are sealed today.

I think Whirlpool/Maytag/Amana only offer Aqua-lift steam clean. Not very effective.

Gas 24" Self-Cleaning Wall Ovens

Older ones would use the broiler at the beginning of the SC cycle to get the oven up to around 550F and the broilers flame was quite effective at burning off the initial smoke that always happens as an oven heats up for self-cleaning.

 

I am not sure if they do this any longer, many just use the bake burner and they smoke a lot for the first 30 minutes if the oven is very dirty.

 

All Gas ovens Emit a lot of heat [ about 4 times as much as an electric oven ] and odors along with carbon monoxide and moisture.

 

BIG question, Why not get an electric oven ?, In the past 40 years I bet we pulled out nearly 100 24" gas wall ovens and converted them to electric, the only exception are a few large apartment buildings in DC where there are tiny fuse boxes for the apartment with only 4 fuses and a 30 amp main breaker for each apartment.

 

In your home you only need  a 12ga 20 amp line for a wall oven. Electric SCWOs all have a catalyst to minimize smoke durning Self Cleaning.

While ovens are sealed, they aren't air tight.

Air expanding and such.

So, the whole "filter" thing has been a question as well for me.

Many EU SC ovens contain katalytic converters.
They are small ceramic inserts coated with a katalyst that converts most orders and some of the gases much like a car.

No EU manufacturer lists them except for Miele.

Yet my AEG (ELux built) berry BOL pyrolytic oven has one that is surprisingly effective.

However even mid to upper line Bosch models don't.

The 20yo Bosch at my best friends house smelles a lot no matter the soiling.
Mine does not at all.

Thank you all for the feedback. Sadly I will need to stick with gas. My oven is mounted in a wall next to the refrigerator . I would be impossible to retrofit a smaller electric oven in that space and I am not ready to do a "major " remodel. So gas it is , will be looking at the Frigidaire and Sears Kenmore models now .

Shorter Electric Oven

How hard is it to just have a nice shelf under the new oven for baking sheets, cookware etc, or lower the oven and have a shelf above and put a compact MWO there and save counter space.

 

Or if you want to do the easy thing use a filler panel.

 

We have done this dozens of times, why get something that will not work any better than what you have ?
