I thought the last bit was amusing...

...discussing a society 'timid of using spice' or some such.

Funny thing I find is that in some ways old cookbooks used MORE spice, especially for baking -- cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, whereas now all we do is eat chocolate.
(I don't like the stuff so I don't).

Good spice cookies or spice cakes are hard to find unless you make them yourself.
 
I used to have a collection of Saturday Evening Post magazines that were filled with Aunt Jenny. I was never too sure of her and suspect that if it were today the public would be demanding a DNA test.
