Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I would say they have the full width of the panel fluorescents. The ‘71 imperial 80 set that I have has the fluorescent bulbs that light the timer dials and the plastic lens on the bottom of the control panels.

Well, I can now say the neighbors that moved in next door and had this pair, moved in sometime between mid and late 1967 as the son was born December 1967.

Looks like it has a little outer tub rot in a couple visible places from the back. One being where the rear tub mount bolt goes through the outer tub securing it to the baseplate. Hopefully it looks worse in the picture than in reality but it’s not a show stopper for sure.

Minimal rust

The picture looks worse than reality from what I could see. A lot of what I saw was dirty etc but not rust. I need to clean lots to get a more accurate look. I’ll probably disassemble this completely and do any rust repairs if there are any at that time. I’m sure I’ll be updating everyone more soon.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. They confirm that is the exact one my aunt had for 27 years, same shade and all. Good to see what the matching dryer looked like. Her washer was mated with a Westinghouse dryer...which outlived the washer.

Update

So I ran the washer last night and the wash basket is not spinning for the spin cycle. The tub is a little hard to turn as well but the normal agitation seems to be working fine as well as the drain pump,- timer etc. I’m guessing it has a clutch issue? This machine was destined for a complete tear down no matter what, but I was hoping to just pull it apart for cleaning, lubrication, rust touch up etc. Any advice would be great with the spin issue. It does sound like it’s spinning out but the tub isn’t moving so that’s why I’m thinking a bad or at least a sticky clutch. I have also attached photos of the model tag from the washer so we can get an accurate manufacture date. Sorry they are a little blurry.

Not exactly a Bryan Adam’s set!

But they were built very close to the “Summer of 69” 😬 Any help with this no spin issue would be great as I’ve never pulled a belt drive Whirlpool like this one apart before and I want to make sure I know what to look for in terms of what the problem might be.

WP BD not spinning

Hello Shannon

If the washer is agitating without issue and timer advancing, these are some things I would check to rule out simple things first if you haven't done so already.

Put it into spin on another cycle to confirm its not a timer issue.

Make sure the lid switch is operating correctly - it won't go into spin if it thinks the lid isn't closed. That machine probably has a mercury switch.

Check the wires to the solenoids on the wig wag to make sure they are connected and no breaks. Spin wire is usually red if I remember correctly but wiring diagram would confirm.

If the wires look connected correctly and no sign of being broken, I would probably try to run the machine with the service panel off if possible and watch the wig wag when its supposed to go into spin. Make sure the cam bar on the spin side is changing position correctly.

Those are the things I would check first but there are experts here that can probably provide better diagnostic ideas.

That is a beautiful washer!  I hope the no-spin issue is an easy fix.

I don't see the usual "bed of nails" or bristle type of removable lint catcher.  Did this model have a self-cleaning lint filter?
