Robert, I wouldn't be too hasty to send this to Toyota's factory just yet. This is really such a rare find, I think it could even eventually be put in the future museum in MD even for dispaly. But, don't' forget there's that pesky ol ho-hum Norge in the Boston area. I bet a midnight panty raid (euphamism for raiding someone's washer basement) would yield a quite respectable donor machine.

I actually preferred this machine over ours because the 8 programmed buttons didn't offer the flexibility of this model and I cursed ours for that. I think mom chose our model because of the dispensers.

I'm sure, with so many different types of springs in production, something else could be found.

The thing that kills me about this machine still is the agitator. Soo similar to the solid tub Norge.. It's cool because I'm used to the big angel wing agitator w/ the perf tubs

Possible Good News

I spoke to Don (jetaction) this morning and he still has that 1972-1974 Montgomery Ward Washer sitting in his garage, you remember this one which also produced this recently. Greg, Don and I found that Avocado Wards washer on the street here close to my house back in 2006. I've determined that the Wards Signature that Fred and I just found is a 1964 model, the parts donor machine is a 1972-1974 model. While I'm sure the motor can be swapped, what I'm not sure about is if the Transmission parts are compatible. I guess we will find out, although this is going to be a lot of work and no promises, if I can't get this machine to work properly out it goes, no question asked, we cannot save everything and thinking you or telling other people they should is preposterous. So keep you fingers crossed everyone.

Request for Doctrine

Interestingly enough I found a <a href = http://www.automaticwasher.org/TD/ARCHIVE/MODERN/2006/7577x5.htm target=_blank>Thread from Nate</a> who found a Norge/Wards machine with the EXACT same symptoms as this machine to the T! Ohhh Nate what ever happened to this machine? :-D

Here is the parts list for the transmission in this Wards. While I have to take it apart to verify I suspect the problem child part is the clutch spring (part #9 colored in pink). When the motor turns the transmission pulley counter-clockwise this spring unwinds and allows the shaft it surrounds to turn freely and drive the agitator gears. When the motor reveres and turns the pulley clockwise the spring wraps tightly against that same shaft and meshes the shaft with the transmission housing which causes the entire transmission housing to turn. Since the wash tub is essentially bolted to the top of the transmission, both it and the wash tub spin, (just like in a Maytag).

Since I have a 1974 parts donor, does anyone have a parts breakdown the mid 70s Norge transmission? I'm wondering what if any differences there are between the two????

From the 1970's Wards service and parts info, the spring part number is 33-3195 which stayed the same through the 80's. Likely is different.

(did you know that Wards had a solid-state variable speed motor washer in 1965? Fascinating)
