Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Really good link and video--I also like disposers, shredders, compactors and trash truck compactors. This video shows the real inside world of the disposer-If you like this video go to SSI world, and classic Refuse trucks. Both sites show fascinating videos and clips of shredders and compactors-as good as the disposer one.Love the PendPac video on Classsic Refuse Trucks.Oh yes-SSI World shows an SSI shredder devouring a DD WP washer. After looking up Applianceville and Vacuumland-go to the Classic Refuse Trucks to see the compactors-then SSI world for the latest "shred of the Month"Its really too bad other disposer companies haven't shown the inside world of the disposers in action!that GE film clip is the best one about disposers!Wished GE still used the Carboloy shredder-Have used their machines with that and they grind up just about anything!I can vaguely remember another Applianceville member linked a video to ISE disposers-but the ISE video didn't show "in the hopper" action like the GE one did.Love those hopper shots wether disposers, trash trucks,shredders.etc.

That was a most enlightening video. Thanks for posting. I never really knew exactly how a disposer works. It seems that the internal grinding hasn't changed much over the years.

We only use our disposal for food scrapings and that's about it.
We tried heavier stuff in this disposal (Whirlaway 1/3 HP) and all it does is bounces the stuff around for what seems like forever.
We tried a lemon rind in the disposal in our last house (GE) and the machine went into a constant jam mode. The remains of the lemon would get stuck between the flywheels and the housing thereby stopping and jamming the flywheel.
One of our neighbors even uses hers to get rid of those cardboard mild cartons! We'd never try that. I imagine I'd be under the sink disassembling that darned thing afterwards.

The neighbor risks clogged plumbing if they continue to use their disposer to shred milk cartons. And the sewer company could rattle her tree if their system gets clogged from the milk bottle shreds. The milk cartons should go to the trash.Just rinse them out and throw them in the trash can.

I've always used my disposer as a paper shredder too.
Stuff like checks and bank statements.
works great!
always use plenty of water.

I Put Everything in Mine.I have a Old Maytag Fc-10 that I got in November it was new though.I LOVE that disposer it will grind anything cardboard, paper, raw bones of all kinds, nothing bothers it.It is a MASSIVE machine huge grind ring the biggest Ive seen in a disposer for the home. The hammers float above the flywheel there like on bearings and there is a rubber bump in the center that keeps it quite. The grind chamber has SS liner and then rubber and SS again. It has two undercutters under the flywheel also. The machine is only a 1/2 H.p. thats whats shocking.I have TON of old disposers laying around here and its my Favorite. Its VERY quite but the Ise Excel has it beat by a little.I have been so hard on this machine cauz well thats me and its fun the grind is still sharp and there is NO auto reverse on it.I have a 92 Wasteking that I used and was shocked at how fast the shredder dulled in it in just a month. The G.e. machines both kind are great machines the motor in my Maytag is a G.e...The ring Carb-oly is a stamped type but its the hardest stuff Ive seen sav for the Maytag. The old disposer are so much better than the stuff out there Now.The Viking is O.k. but it was better when Viking made it.Jeff has the best collection Ive seen and he knows more than me about them.I LOVE them and dishwashers but dont have the room for Dishwashers.

From things I have read and seen and thru expereience-I don't want to use a disposer as a paper shredder-better to get a paper shredder for that-and another cool machine to add to the collection.Ground paper can resolidify later on in your plumbing.its not worth the risk.Yes disposers can shred most things-but can your plumbing accept it?Best to keep hard paper out of the plumbing especially if you have a septic tank as my house has.I also liked those older Maytag disposers-very tough machines and yes could chop up about anything.Miss the cast shred rings-the stampted ones are junk.I like disposers too and have a small collection of them-not as many as some Applianceville folks have.Yes I have seen the Komar site-they are the largest builder of Auger type compactors and shredders.Love the dual auger units-the one film clip of it eating a large metal cabinet-or box.Sanitech is another builder of auger compactors.another site that has demos is Glosser Industries-they make precrusher compactors.Sadly they show a washer getting crushed in one video.Looked like a GE.

Does anyone know the date on this film (or did I miss it). It was apparently made before GE started using the series wound motors in some of their models...which operate about 8,000 rpm.

I must admit that I often use my disposer to grind up credit card applications, etc. that I receive in the mail. It's more secure. (Big jobs, of course, are done in a real paper shredder.)

Disposers work great for wet and greasy paper towels that you don't want to put in your trash. I use lots of paper towels and it keeps the bulk down in the trash.

The Maytag is a real workhorse. Like a dummy, I left it in my old house before I sold it. Should have taken it with me and left the buyer with a cheap ISE or something.

Probably the Maytag is my favorite, but it is a very close race with the series wound motor GE models. Their downfall is the noise (like a small vacuum cleaner under your sink). However, they are unequaled (as far as I have found) in speed of grinding pork chop bones, corn cobs and especially fruit pits.

Most other machines I have had have pits bounce around for a while before they grind up. The series GE slices them fast with the Carboloy cutter.

Yea I know I shouldnt put paper in there.I dont dump loads in my Maytag mainly coffee Filters, teabags with the string gone of course. We have a Drain Auger to clean our Pipes out so that does help alot.Yea I will NEVER let go of my Maytag. When it was listed on Ebay the bidding went to 305$ for it.I of course got it but when I got a MONTH later USPS is SLOW.There was NO sink flange or anything plus it was locked up.The guy did not Pack it well and it got dropped hard.I took it apart and Oiled everything and I had to buy some lock nuts because if I screwed it down it would bind it up.So the end cap in a little loser and I used my Old Peerless Flange it fit perfect. They guy did refund half my money so that was real nice.I was Amazed at the quality of everything in it.Made like a tank.I have Two G.E. disposers the Fast and slow one your right the 8000Rpm is the Fastest at grinding bones and cobs the motor does scream. Its a good design though there is no grind ring in it so nothing to dull. There is a Spike on the side but thats it the strainer is the thing that surrounds the Flywheel.I do like them but its sitting in a box.I have a Wasteking Comercial machine its a 1/2 Hp Huge machine but with the normal sink hookup. Its kinda loud the cast hammers slam into the flywheel which is attached to a large weight it looks like.It does grind real good though dont know why I keep it.Whats strange is I have always been more power the better but the Maytag I have stuffed full of bones a peach pits at once and it dont bother it.I have never been able to jam it I try but no.Its only 1/2 Hp I dont know why there so hard to find I think there better than the three Hobarts I have.I have been trying to find that grind nails demo but no luck.Oh yea Toilvac the instrctions for my old National disposer says to put ciggrette butts in it.I was blown away by that my Roommate house he did that and ever sink,Toilet, and then the sewer came in the house.Oh yea one more thing did Frigidare ever make there own disposers when GM owned them?

From what I hear (if it's true) Frigidaire/GM made their own for a while, then sometime in the seventies contracted Waste King to make them.

Come to think of it, I can never recall my Maytag ever jamming in the years that I had it.......and it sure got a workout.

My series motor GE's rarely ever jammed, but I occasionally had the thermal cutout kick in when doing too many corn cobs too fast, etc.

One interesting thing about the GE series disposers ("Disposalls" as GE calls them) is that the force at which they expel water (due to the ulta-high rpms's)really keep your drain clean.

I recommended them to my brother-in-law and sister who had serious and chronic stoppage problems with their kitchen sink (bad design by the plumber). My brother-in-law got the series GE and never had a stoppage again from that point on until he sold the house (somewhere around 3 years.)

I have an induction motor GE batch feed (about a 1978 model) and it occasionally jams, unlike it's series motor siblings. A series-wound motor will increase its torque as the load increases and the rpm's drop. The peak of the torque curve is at the lower end of the rpm range. It will fight a load to the bitter end and draw increasing amounts of current (up to rotor lock) to do so. That's why they are so hard to jam. If it weren't for the thermal overload acting as a watch dog it would destroy itself trying trying. They remind me of a race horse who gives it's life to win a race.

The Maytag's are induction, but I think Maytag very conservatively rated it them at 1/2 hp. Being such a big heavy disposer, the shear mass of the motor and surrounding unit served as a good heat sink and absorbed a lot of the heat energy the series GE's couldn't readily dispel.

Very sad that Maytag quit making their own disposers (same with GE).

Whiterock Disposers

John, Wes or any of you ever had one of Whiterock Manufacturing's disposers? They make the Monarch and Sinkguard brands (in China).

Just curious as to performance.

Yes I have a Eastman. Its a Joke dont bother with them at all there made in China I think not sure but it looks like the Panda series I have seen. They have a plastic grind chamber and its easy to break it.They do have cast Impellers and there is one pointy spike that has been punched through on the edge if the flywheel. The grind ring in stamped and looks kinda like Ise badge models.Ise is a strange company they have a Cast ring on one model only. Its a 3/4 Hp e505 from the Doit hardware chain the stupid thing is no Auto reverse on it.

Sence I have so many disposer I modify them to make them better. My Wasteking 1hp high speed one not the good old ones.Well I took it apart and put the shreeder in a vice and cut the edges of the lip and took some vice grips and bent then around and over where the will stick out in the chamber.I did that 3 times and took some JB weld and Fixed the cast impellers in place they dont move at all.I then took my dremel and sharping everything and smashed pices off a old Ise Cast ring that I took off a old ISE Classic that was burnt up. The harder the metal they can get brittle.Well I picked the best shards of the grind ring pointy and sharp and took the cold weld and put in in places on the ring in the round holes close enough that it would not jam it.Let it dry and it works so much better now. That Jb Weld is VERY STRONG and the disposer will grind anything. If it was a induction motor it would jam more I think but that is one Advantage of the Perm mag motors they have tons of start torque.I have put steak bones and other things and its faster a less noisy alot none of that clicking noise that drives me NUTS.Im going to order some tungsten rods to modify me another one.I didnt think Jb weld would hold up I was going to mig it but you haved to be careful you could throw it of balance and the Jb weld is light I didnt think it would work but it does great.

Thanks for the tip, Wes. Will stay away from the Whiterock units.

Another problem I had with the Anaheim units, in addition to the annoying clicking, is certain things seem to get caught (somehow)between the impeller and flywheel and throws the flywheel out of balance--causing vibration.

Corn cobs seem to be the worst offender. Did you ever notice this? I have had several Anaheims (3/4 and 1 hp units) under the GE and Wasteking name badges and they all did this.

Drives one batty.

Well yes and its just another reason why I don't buy the disposers that our out on the Market today.Wasteking&Ise have been cutting corners to save money just like any company would. The Wastekings don't have bearings in there at all well the have a sleave bearing which is a cork like sleave that has oil imbedded in there. There not really ment for heavy duty apps.I.S.E. the last one I took apart did have a ball bearings in it but just under the flywheel water and oil slingers. There is no bearing at all on the bottom of the motor from the ones I have seen.My WasteKing Commercial has ball bearings on the top&bottom and you can tell the tolerances are alot tighter. The disposer corp out there know its cheaper to sell power and there right it is than to use heavy duty parts Wasteking is very simple diposer and very light so that saves shipping costs.Ise is Emerson and they are a huge company and there motors are some of the best.Emerson ceiling fans can be over a grand if you go with that K55 motor. The New I.S.E. excel is not bad its very quite very quite. They could have done a better job on the grind ring but they didnt.I would get it over any Wasteking but it does this strange pause before it starts(EXCEL ONLY)and draws alot of current.I was told this is normal its the Jamsensor but the motor was warm and the wiring was its very odd at least it was for me and if you turned on the disposer while the Microwave was on it threw the breaker. It does grind alot better than the others but Its No old Maytag,Wasteking,Hobart...OH yea my Highspeed waste king did that alot the hammers would slide back and get stuck on the bump stop and that gap at the edge would get things stuck in it.Thats Why I took mine apart and made it Look Scary inside blades everywhere and no clicking.I worked so much better it would even grind corn husks after that not tons but it would do it at least instead of balling it up but without undercutters I didnt put them all down it.

Even another Anaheim disposer problem-Don't put too much stuff in it at a time-the motor will lug down too much and burn out the rectifier.I used to be able to get replacements at Radio Shack-since RS now sells mostly cell phones and toys-less electronic parts now.You can tell the rectifier is out-the breaker on the disposer trips-but the flywheel turns freely.Love the modified Anaheims-sounds pretty neat-yes-put those Carboloy cutters in there!Surprized the GE branded ones don't have the Carboloy shredders.
