Metronet is a new company that has been putting fiber throughout the city. We finally have fiber. We got the 200/200 49.95 mo.

Looks like they have plans from 100/100, 200/200, 500/500, 1gig/1gig

I doubt my devices could handle a gig.

Before, I only had 3mb upload and my ring doorbell barely worked.

We have had it since May. There are no data caps and I freaking LOVE it.

There are so many mixed reviews and most seem to be people upset about the digging in their yards or not reaching speeds....but I think the speeds are related to your devices....My desktop computer which is ethernet connect, as well as my Roku which is eternet only reach speeds of 100 Mbps because I think that's as fast as they are capable of reaching. My desktop is old, like from 2013 I think or around that, but I just use it as a Plex server.

Weird I get the best speeds over wifi than LAN. I checked download transfer rates downloading a large file and I was getting around 24 mb/s

I hope it's OK to post this since internet is a product related to the "home"

I have NO complaints about AT&T fiber.  It was the only option AT&T offered when we moved to a new house 2.5 years ago, which was a huge leap from their pathetic DSL service at the other house, which we abandoned for Comcast.

 

The trouble with fiber is that the capital outlay required means the telcos and other providers are very selective about where they decide to create the infrastructure.  My neighborhood is so old (100+ years) by facilities standards that the copper network was pretty much toast and a PITA to maintain, so AT&T replaced it with fiber.  Utilities are all still overhead, so that kept costs for improvements down.

 

I'm paying $50/mo. for 100/100 and haven't found a better deal than that.  For the absolute highest speed, run a cable from the modem directly to your computer.  There's some speed loss using the wireless feature, but even with that, it's still crazy fast.

.....and I recently dumped TV service for internet service only. I pay $55 a month for "up to" 100 mbps download speeds but I routinely get around 120 mbps. Upload speed is only 4-6 mbps at best which is "standard" for Comcast internet service. Maybe AT&T fiber will come to my neighborhood one day. Utilities are above ground on my street but one street South of me and beyond, all utilities are underground.

I can't get AT&T DSL or uVerse at my house.  Yay!  Unless that has changed since I'm last aware (Booo!).

I have service via the local cable outfit, which is a Sparklight (previously Cable one) reseller.  Lowest tier plan which is 100/10 @ $55 (TX no longer applies sales tax to Internet service as of July 1, previously the first $25 was not taxable).  I did a test few mins ago, clocked 110.89/10.51.

uVerse at work.  Had DSL there for some years prior.  The digital projectors require a static IP for tech reasons, which ATT said they couldn't provide on DSL so "upgrade" was required.  Lowest tier service, which is noticeably slower than my cable.  Did a couple tests there last night, it was more painfully slow than usual at 5-ish Mbps.  Crazy.  Would be ~$80/month if not for discounts for having multiple landlines and the owner has a cell in the package.

Our Wide Open West service manages quite well with speed, security, and the streaming. Hubby uses a VPN. Used to have an air card device, but they were deemed redundant last year by his employer. Low and behold, he no sooner returned it, and we begam having service interuptions. Road construction crews seem to manage to sever main hub lines. At least thats what they tell us. Have also experienced a few utages after other companies have been working around here.

Forgot to mention

Metronet uses CGNAT (Carrier grade NAT).....It's mostly beyond my techical knowledge but from what I understand, you share your IP with a batch of other people. You can get around that by getting static IP, but it's like $9 extra per month. Honestly, it's not problem for me....but it makes me wonder if a website IP bans someone, would that ban everyone that's on that IP? I'm not sure.

Internet speed for 'mere mortals'

Here in the U.K. I'm on British Telecom's cheapest option..... Download speed around 3.5 MBPS..... Upload speed around 200 KBPS !! That's seriously sloooooooooooooooow!!

It is cheap, though!! ;-)

They have been tearing up our city for a while now! Lol.
We are very interested in dumping Spectrum and switching to MetroNet. However, we are likely moving soon and can not sign a contract. Our service with Spectrum since it switched from TimeWarner has been absolute TRASH! Our summer home only can have Mediacom as a provider for internet, and they are even worse! It is sad that companies can charge so much and provide so little. Very glad you are enjoying your service.

IP bans

Are usually not quite such a large issue.

I get a new IP every time I restart my router, same would go for such a connected IP OR the provider will make sure they get differentiated anyway.

Your traffic will be differentiated anyway, so they can certanly do something.

More likely are MAC-Adress bans and those are hardware/frimware depednent, so those can't be mixed up or swapped easily.

I was on 500 cable with 50 up until 4 days ago when prices would have jumped up beyond my 40€ cap for that.
So I used my providers offer to dial down after the first year to a plan of my choosing and opted for the 40€ 200 / 25 plan.

Am chatting with customer service though if I can switch to their current offer for 1000/100 for the same price that offer for new customers.

Would be willing to be bound for another 2 years.
If I should be moving beforehand I could get out of the contract anyway if it wasn't avaible at my new adress.

Fibre is aswesome though.

Best of times I have 50 ping and that is through the provider servers.
A buddy of mine back home has fibre and his pings are like 20 or lower at any time to basicly any service though the next hub is about the same distance from his house.

One tip for anybody:

Try another DNS-Service like 1.1.1.1 or googles DNS offering.
They are pretty esy to set up on any device and my responsiveness on lots of main services are a lot better then before.
