An interesting speech

For the first time in a long time, a leading Democrat actually didn't sound apologetic for caring about the working class.
Enough, indeed.
But will it be?
I hope so - perhaps the democrats are finally ready to push back and push back hard. Sure would be nice, for a change.

I thought his speech was fantastic! He is a very good speaker. Hope the right people will listen to what he is saying. He speaks the truth.

It was a wonderful speech - from the bits and pieces I was able to catch last night. I've been waiting, since January 3rd, to hear him speak like this again. Wonderful points - middle class, gun control, GOP fear mongering - the whole nine yards.

Even for this simple fact - why do we want another 4 years of someone at the top who does not have the talent to speak effectively to a crowd, a nation, the world? I for one am ready for Obama.

I'm Thinking of the party here

I don't want to come across as racist, but we also have to remember we live in Red Neck America still. Though many of us Dem's don't see anything but the man. There are many in this country that see something much different.

I truely feel that Obama needs to play down the Rev. Jackson, Martin Luther King connection if he wants to win the southern states. Even here at work, in the mid-west I am hearing grumbles. 'Well, I'd like him more if Jackson and Sharpton weren't in his ring." Sometimes the guilt by association is worse than standing alone.

In any case, the Obama campaign will play alot on the "White Guilt" and it may/will work with those already on his side, but I don't see it swaying many cross over votes from the GOP, which is what is going to be required to win this thing nation wide. Let's face it there are a lot of Red states that have to be swayed.
JMHO--Don't shoot me.

YAY! Thank the big 3-Ring Agitator in the sky

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting this morning that our gov (the Bridge Queen) is not the choice for VP and will not be going to Dayton, but will be going to the State Fair instead, lol. It's bad enough having that convention here next week, but to have our gov chosen as the McSame's running mate would have been two slaps in the face. And I may add to have it done in Dayton, OH, home of our belovid GM Frigidaire would have been a third slap in the face. ***ouch***

I wonder who he is going to pick????

Morning Joe reports~

You heard it here first. NBC News is floating around the name of Fmr Florida Governor Jeb Bush as McCain's running mate. If McCain chooses Bush, I will then have no choice but to support Obama.

If McCain is smart, he will convince Colin Powell to be on his ticket. That would be a winning team.

Well, that was the deal he cut

with Poppy and his Grandmother, wasn't it?
Yes, that was catty.
I would prefer him to choose someone who would take the christianists out of the mix. They will never vote for a black man (racism goes hand in hand with other stupidity) yet there is a good chance they will stay home if the VP choice is sufficiently rooted in a century after the 13th.
Unfortunately, Ralph Nader just gave a brilliant, incisive, outstandingly good speech here in Wyoming...I fear he may just get enough 'vote my conscience' voters here in the Rocky Mountain West to make a difference.

Post# 299999-8/29/2008-08:17 ||| iheartmaytag

Good morning,

That was a great post.

I was just talking to a friend this morning about the exact same topic!

Believe me, it's not just the "red" states or the "Republicans" that I'm concerned about regarding racism. And for what I have to say, I shall quote iheartmaytag's closing statement: "JMHO--Don't shoot me."

What bothers me the most are those so-called "Arm Chair Liberals." They are the first to grumble about how bad things are for minorities and demand food, homes, shelters, etc. for minority/ethnic populations in cities. Their work is viewed as commendable; HOWEVER, "not in my back yard." They would be the first to complain about an ethnic/minority family living next door. This spoken with experience.

Makes me wonder, when they are in the voting booths, what their final decision will be.

We've got some town people who work in the food pantries in the cities in our area. They donate their time. They do NOT wear it on their shoulders that they do this work. Heck, we've done that and are surprized at the amount of people we see helping out that are from our town ... ya never know. (hope I'm not going off-track here)

Rob.

but, really, folks...

How can you honestly think that the democrats care about the working class, women, gays, or anyone?

How can you think that the republicans do either?

They are politicians -- they want POWER.

No one is willing to face the fact that the USA has serious, endemic problems that need significant cooperation, work, and sacrifice.

1. I read two or three days ago that only 28% of all individuals are eligible to enter the US Army. The Army is doing 'prep schools' to help kids who don't have GEDs get them.

How is this possible? When we spend an incredible sum on education? WHAT are kids learning now? If an educated workforce is necessary for a nation to be successful (and it is - look at Singapore and Israel, both nations with few natural resources - that are wealthy. And these are just off the top of my head.

2. Balance of payments: We haven't had a balanced budget ever. Yes, I know that Clinton fans will say ' it was balanced under Bill!' but it wasn't. The excess social security funds were counted as part of that balance. And off sheet liabilities aren't counted at all. Getting our financial house in order is going to mean sacrifice. What GWB has done is more than a sin. It's a horror.

3. Rebuilding manufacturing base. All I can say for this is thank god for high fuel prices. It is making it cheaper to manufacture things here.

4. Development of alternative fuels. This was done during WWII and Carter pushed it big time. Regan stopped a lot of it (Shame!) But don't get me started on how good the Ds are and how bad the Rs are -- during a decade of incredible prosperity, under Clinton who professed to be "Mr Environmental President" NO alternative enregy work was done, while we continued to import more oil.

The solutions to our problem are quite simple, but folks keep arguing about non issues such as gay rights, abortion, and guns. It's quite simple: It is already illegal to commit crimes with guns. So create a culture that says it is bad to commit crimes, not the "don't let me CATCH YOU doing that!" like we have now. Gay rights? Personally, I think that EVERYONE should get 'civil unioned' and get 'married' in a church. Then, if you are gay and in an inclusive church, you can get 'married.' If you are straight and homophobic, gays can't 'marry' in your church. But the legal protections exist. Abortion? Panthera has it right on. If decades of Republican control of at least one house of government hasn't made it illegal, it ain't gonna.

But nobody wants to discuss real issues.

The democrats would win in a landslide if they actually were inclusive and gave a damn about anyone. It is very hard really to come to grips with the fact that citizens have NO advocates in government, but it is what it is. If we actually HAD limited government this wouldn't be a big deal, but....

i'll say this about Gov. Sarah Palin

her husband is HOT! She has an approval rating of 90%. The highest of any governor in the nation.

One way or another. History has been made for both parties.

well,

Lots of Nazis were 'hot', too.
Personally, I am appalled. She is the worst possible choice for the democrats...and the least bad for the republicans.
Whoever made this decision (McSame's mommy?) it is not a good thing.
Let's hope she turns out to have been involved in some of the stuff going down in Alaska now.
Gad.
By the way, Nate, lots of my students in Munich are Americans, people who knew in their early teens that they could never afford to go to college in the US - so they took German in their schools and are now studying in Germany. Same with Italy, France, etc. In Europe, we spend a lot of money on education, but we don't discriminate between the poor and the rich as the Americans do...we know that brains are what count, not the size of daddy's pocketbook.
Ironically, once those American students graduate, they get snapped right up by European businesses and governments. Everybody knows that immigrants who speak fluent English are in high demand. Not Spanish.
Who'd a thunk it!

Palin

She being described as and I quote via cut and paste: "as a "religious conservative," was elected to lead Alaska in 2006 after defeating the Republican incumbent. She is strongly pro-life, opposes same-sex "marriage," and is noted for her energy policies promoting independence from big oil companies."

Imagine that, gods, gays and oil. Uh huh. Same old same old.

So they are trying to appeal to their evangelical base. But the fact that she is a woman might deter just enough of them from leaving their pew on election day. Its going to be interesting.

Well, maybe I should vote for McSame now!! The VP is a woman, she is pretty, and her husband is hot!! <:

They may as well have picked Ann Coulter, IMO

I love this quote

Palin: ". . .I can't tell you what kind of VP I will be until someone answers for me what it is exactly the VP does every day."

OH, and she is the mother of a special needs child, Down's syndrome, so she will pull the Younger vote, the Female vote, and the Parents of special needs vote. If it weren't for the fact that McCain is exploiting her, and she is allowing it; she might be a good choice.

I can't wait for the debates.

OH, I do like the place where she was charged for inappropriate firing when she had her ex-brother in law fired from the Alaska Highway Patrol. She's got moxie.

fascinating!

Panthera, that's fascinating, but no surprise.

Being for the wrong side of the tracks (in a big way!) I was LUCKY in that I went through school when you could get employer tuition assistance. So I did 2 years full time at junior college, then went to work and finished a BS and MS at night (it took 8.5 years longer to finish both of them!)

I have no idea what poor kids are doing these days. I don't even like to think it.

Some of the issues, though, come in with the idea that parents think that their kid MUST be in an exclusive private college/university, and to get in must do every possible thing you can think of. That kind of paper chase would be very, very, very draining.

Ironic that we're seeing a brain drain AWAY from the US right now, of native born students. Go figure!

Nate

Man, he picked a woman. Now we conservatives have to chose between a black dude & a chick. Both are the type of people we want to keep down. What's he doing? Trying to throw the election? (tongue firmly in cheek)

I heard that Joe Biden wrote Hussein Obama's speech for him last night. Let's listen in backstage....

Joe: "Barry, try this speech out I wrote for you."
Barry: "ok, Joe. Here goes. I have a dream....Hey wait a minute. I think I heard that before."

Joe: "Well, Barry, try this one then."
Barry: "Four score and seven years ago..., HEY! Joe you didn't write these did you?"
Joe: "ok Barry, you got me."
Barry: "Joe, by the way, I'm glad we're free of the influence of lobbyists."
Joe: "Um, Barry. We might have a problem there. You know, my son....."

All I've read on this thread is the typical liberal comeback if you oppose someone who happens to be of color. RACIST, RACIST, RACIST. I don't get that. I do not oppose B. Hussein Obama because he's black. I oppose him because of his politics and platform. Could he actually say what he's going to change? Change change change. What?

Also, Keven, you do not have to be rich to go to college in the states. There are wonderful State schools, community colleges, etc. Not everyone has to go to a private liberal arts college or the like. Also, there are grants (of which I am grateful, they helped alot), loans, etc available. What happened to getting a job and paying one's way through school? Thank God you remind us how much better Europeans/Europe are/is than we are. Just think, in this past century, in Europe if you were Jewish or gay, they had a nice place for you to stay. Showers, ovens, etc. Now, if you are not if the same ethnic persuasion as the majority, you'll be cleansed away. Think Bosnia, Serbia, etc. Europe is sooooo much better and advanced than we could ever strive to be.
Now Keven, I do agree with you that gun control means hitting your target.

"I oppose him because of his politics and platform. "

Such as? Can you cite specific examples - pulled from his actual platform, not something you read about in a chain email - that you oppose? (I've thoughtfully included a link to his policies page, so you can prepare your critique for us.)

Oh, and thanks for the article from the Reverend Moon's newspaper. Nothing like scraping the bottom of the barrel. If you support McCain, you REALLY don't want to "go there" when it comes to the issue of lobbyists.
